Seven Steps to Maximize Sales Consultation: Uncover Client Needs & Unlock Potential

By  Joe Habscheid

Summary: In our pursuit of excellence in sales consultation, we explore seven essential steps that every savvy sales expert must master. Recognizing and understanding these steps will tune your expertise to converge with your client’s needs, optimizing opportunities for profitable engagement and propelling your professional relationship to new levels.

Gathering Information

The journey begins by gathering a comprehensive understanding of your client’s situation. This fact-finding mission should delve into understanding their business, objectives, and challenges. Investing 10 to 20 minutes at this stage will provide a robust foundation for the subsequent steps and ensure you are well-positioned to meet your clients’ needs.

Understanding the Client’s Objectives

Clients often remain unsure about what they want. Here, your role as a consultant is to follow a deeper path of inquiry to discover their true objectives. This process may involve deciphering various aspects of their business, their franchise model, or their digital marketing objectives. Remember, the key is to expose latent needs, much like when Steve Jobs delivered groundbreaking products despite clients not knowing they wanted them.

Dealing with Current Providers

A common myth is that a client can’t jump ship if they’re currently with another provider. However, provider-switching is common, especially if the client’s expectations are not being met. Therefore, a disgruntled client with a current provider can present an excellent market opportunity. But be cautious—if they parted easily with their previous provider, they could quickly jump ship from you too.

Understanding the Client’s Pain Points

Identifying what the client wants to change or improve about their situation allows you to tailor your pitch specifically to their pain-points. You need to understand their problems, frustrations, and ultimate objectives. This level of understanding illuminates the path to cultivating a viable solution for them and away from their most significant issues.

Confirming Understanding

The ability to paraphrase your understanding of the client’s objectives is indispensable. This step offers the client an opportunity to rectify any misunderstandings and confirms your comprehension of their desires and concerns. Engagement is a two-way street, and this step reinforces the reciprocal nature of the engagement process.

Identifying the Most Important Factor

Once you’ve assimilated the client’s objectives, prioritize them. Asking your client to identify which one is the most critical will help streamline your consultation and focus your strategies. Not all problems are created equally. Home in on what’s bleeding the most, then go from there.

Checking for Complete Understanding

Finally, validate your grasp of every detail crucial to the client. This step will provide the assurance that neither side has overlooked crucial aspects before progressing towards any recommendations.

By implementing these seven steps, you will significantly enhance the quality of your sales consultation, ultimately leading to higher satisfaction among clients and potentially attaining optimum marketing outcomes. If there’s one takeaway, remember that understanding your client’s needs is the linchpin for productive sales engagement—all objectives, pain points, and potential solutions revolve around it.
